One year later in Czechia: From new beginnings to friendships
Moving to a new country can be an exhilarating adventure or an overwhelming challenge, depending on how you approach it. For those curious about what it's really like to start fresh in a new environment—new job, new culture, new language—this story offers valuable insights. If you've ever considered making a similar move, their reflections may just inspire you to take that leap. Read on to discover how preparation, adaptability, and a positive outlook can transform the moving experience into an exciting new chapter.
1) How difficult is moving and subsequent acclimatization in a new environment?
Personally, I didn't find it difficult at all. I was waiting for an opportunity like this, and preparing myself. The only thing I was missing is some friends, but eventually I did find a group of friends there.

2) How satisfied are you with your new job after moving?
Satisfied with the amount of work, and the team communication. However, the technical aspects are a bit different. The codebase is heavily outdated, and is currently unmaintainable and unscalable. We are working on refactoring to a new application soon.

3) Were there any problems/challenges and how were they solved?
There were certainly some small challenges, but those were fairly easy to overcome. I think there wasn't a proper onboarding process and for some time, I was completely in the dark about the product that I'm working on. This should probably be fixed for future new employees.

4) How is it to move to a new country all alone?
It was very exciting for me. As I previously mentioned, I've been preparing myself for a change like this.

5) Have you learned anything in the Czech language already?
I've been learning Czech for 2 years already, and I try to speak and practice it as much as possible. Give it a year, I'm sure I'll be speaking almost natively. For new speakers, it might be challenging, especially if you don't already speak another Slavic language.

6) Was the VISA process challenging?
Not applicable to me, since I am an EU citizen. I still didn't report residency, but I'll do so during the next week.

7) Do you have any positive/negative experiences so far?
Work has been steady and pleasant. Outside of work, I've had nothing but positive experiences in a new country and city. Nothing very major to report, but all is good.

8) Do you have any tips for other people who are thinking about relocation?
Go for it! Czechia is a great country in the heart of Europe. I would recommend moving here to everyone. The beer is great, the concerts are cheap, and the people are very friendly.
